Orang Asli , literally "original people", "natural people" or "aboriginal people" in Malay - is a generic Malaysian term used for people indigenous to Peninsular Malaysia.
There are 18 orang asli tribes or sub-groups, categorised under three main groups, namely Negrito, Senoi and Proto-Malay.
Negrito, also known as Semang
- residing in the northern part of the peninsula, comprising of Bateq, Jahai, Kensiu, Kintaq, Lanoh and Mendriq
- residing in the central region, comprising of Chewong, Jah Hut, Mah Meri, Semai, Semaq Beri and Temiar
Proto-Malay, also known as Aboriginal Malay,
- residing in the southern region, comprising of Jakun, Orang Kanaq, Orang Kuala, Orang Seletar, Semelai and Temuan
